Now that spring is here, RVers all across the province are readying their rigs for some warm-weather travel. One of the tasks that often proves to be challenging for RV travellers is cooking, which takes place in a small and cramped RV kitchen with limited ingredients. It can oftentimes seem much easier to get take-out or go to a drive-thru, even if you know it’s not the best option for your health or your wallet.

Cooking in your RV doesn’t have to be arduous, though! Jubilee R.V. Centre in Kamloops is your British Columbia RV dealer and we want to help make every aspect of RVing as enjoyable as possible. To that end, here are some tips for cooking in your RV to take the stress out of the task.

1. Plan Ahead

Take time at home to plan what meals you’ll have during your trip so that you can purchase all the groceries needed and make sure you have the right spices and dishware for cooking them. You can even do some batch-cooking of your favorite time-intensive meals and freeze portions in Tupperware containers.

2. Use a Slow Cooker

Slow cookers are a marvelous invention and they’re perfect for RV cooking. Pop in your ingredients, including cuts of meat, chopped vegetables and stock, and turn your cooker on, then return in the afternoon to a warm, hearty meal that takes almost no effort!

3. Clean As You Go

Since space is at a premium in your RV, it only makes sense to clean up your workspace as you go. Rinse dishes or put them aside to soak, wipe off knives and cutting boards, compost vegetable scraps and put away ingredients once you’re done using them.

4. Cook Outside

Avoid heating up your camper by setting up a grill or cooking over the campfire outside. You can wrap vegetable skewers in foil and prepare cuts of meat, poultry and fish on a grill. Hamburgers and hot dogs are also perennial favorites with most families. And don’t forget about making s’mores for dessert!

5. Don’t Cook

This might seem counterintuitive, but you can prepare lots of meals easily in your RV without ever turning on an oven burner! Here are some no-cook meal ideas:

  • Breakfast: yogurt parfaits with fresh fruit and granola; cereal and milk; fruit smoothies.
  • Lunch: sandwich buffet with chips and pickles; cold pasta salad.
  • Dinner: tossed green salad with leftover cold grilled meats; tuna salad on toast.
