FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

Between the wirings and appliances in your rig and the campfire outside, the possibility of a sudden fire certainly isn’t out of left field, even when you’re trying to be careful. A true veteran knows that while preventative measures are important, being ready for the worst is essential. Make sure your RV has fire extinguishers scattered throughout the interior, and maybe even have one in an outdoor storage area. This way, you can easily access one, no matter where you are or where the fire is.

EMERGENCY RADIO AND CHARGER

Power outages can happen even in your RV. One down tree and the whole campsite can lose power. Or maybe you’re using your RV as a second home after a disaster. No matter what the emergency is, staying connected can be crucial or at the very least give you some peace of mind. An emergency radio, that preferably is a crank radio or runs on batteries, should be an important addition to your emergency supplies. Definitely make sure it doesn’t need to be hooked up to your RV’s electrical grid to work, as you may not have that luxury. If it needs to be charged, then charge it as often as possible to ensure it’s ready for work when you need it.

TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM

Sometimes the best plan for emergencies includes more preventative measures than after-the-fact solutions. A tire pressure monitoring system is a great way to keep track of problems you may run into with your wheels. There are systems you can have installed that will give you regular reports on how your tires are performing, so you can see when one of them might be losing pressure. You can also keep track of your tire pressure manually with a record sheet and tire pressure gauge. Either way, your tires are an important part of a safe trip so take sudden or odd changes very seriously.

TRAILER BRAKE CONTROLLER

Unlike some of the other towable RVs, fifth wheels can be massive. While you’re probably already using a truck that can safely haul the weight (and if you’re not, you should fix that before your next trip), even the toughest trucks won’t brake as easily when they have such a massive amount of weight and bulk behind them. One way to give your tow vehicle a break (pun intended) is to install a trailer brake controller. This will ensure the trailer’s brake syncs up with your tow vehicle brakes and help you make smoother and more efficient stops.

Whether you’re looking to protect your fifth wheel or your campers, there’s a lot you can be doing to prevent and prepare for emergencies. This covers some of the basics, but talking to those around your local RV communities can help you can insight from other, more experienced RVers.
