Summer is here so it’s time to start planning your trips. If you’ve got an older camper, it may not have air conditioning and the heat can become really uncomfortable on your trips when temperatures climb higher. The further south you go or further into the prairie you go, the warmer temperatures are likely to be. So it’s important to have some strategies to beat the heat.

Jubilee R.V. Centre is your British Columbia RV dealer, located in Kamloops and serving greater Vancouver and Prince George. Here are our top tips to help you stay cool in the heat this summer.

Park Strategically

One easy way to keep your camper a little cooler is to park it so that the side with the doors and the most windows doesn’t face west. The sun is at its hottest during the mid-afternoon, so facing your windows to the north or east will help prevent too much heat from building up. If you can, park underneath some shade or extend your awning if you have it to provide a little more shade and coolness.

Ventilate Your RV

Another good way to prevent heat from building up in your camper is to make sure it’s ventilated. Open up all vents and ensure there are no blockages by regularly cleaning out vents. Adding some insulation to your vents can help to prevent hot air from seeping into your camper, too.

If you have some box or stand fans, set these up in the rooms you’re spending time in to blow the air around and prevent it from getting too hot and stagnant. You can even create a sort of rudimentary cooling system by filling a bowl with ice cubes and cold water and placing it directly in front of a fan. The melting ice vapor will be blown around and cool the air a bit.

Remove Heat Sources

There are several things in your camper that can put heat out into the air. All your electronic devices and incandescent lights, for example, could be turned off during the day to reduce the temperature. Instead of cooking in your stove or oven where the heat will make you miserable, why not take your food preparation outside? Set up a grill under your awning and grill burgers, hot dogs, chicken, fish and veggies, then enjoy them at a picnic table!
