While travel trailers are fairly easy to master and learn how to tow, it is still helpful to really know what you’re doing. Towing a travel trailer requires some focus and care to ensure that your trailer doesn’t sway into other lanes of traffic or become impossible to stop. Here are a few tips to help you tow safely.

Double-Check Your Hitch

One of the riskiest parts of towing a travel trailer is having it come loose from its hitch. That’s why making sure the hitch connection is secure should be a top priority for you. Also, use towing chains crossed in an X under the tongue of the hitch to further latch your trailer to your towing vehicle as a stopgap measure.

Take It Slow

Don’t go the speed limit when towing your travel trailer, as much as you may want to. Stay around 10 kilometres under the speed limit and slow down even more when approaching curves or turns. It’s better to get there later in one piece than try to get there faster and not make it at all due to a collision.

Increase Following Distance

Speaking of collisions, these can happen when you fail to brake your travel trailer in time to prevent it running into the vehicles in front of you. Keep a few car lengths’ worth of following distance between yourself and the next car, and watch for drivers who may try to sneak into this space. Your travel trailer requires more space to come to a full stop, so giving yourself that extra cushion can be helpful.
