Travel Trailer Camping Tips
Owning a travel trailer means you’ve got unlimited access to the great outdoors. You can explore all of British Columbia or go even further afield if you’re so moved. If you’re new to the travel trailer experience, you may be wondering how you can ensure that your travels go well. Here are some of our tips on how you can camp better with your travel trailer.
Don’t Overburden Your Trailer
Your travel trailer is spacious, sure, but you don’t want to overburden it with too much stuff that only ends up getting in your way or worse, making your travel trailer overweight. Check the weight limits on your towing vehicle and travel trailer so that you can stay under them; you can use a highway weigh station to weigh your camper if you’re not sure how much weight you’ve put on it.
Packing Essentials
Make sure that you stock your travel trailer with all the necessities for your comfort and safety. Some safety-minded items to pack include:
- Fire extinguishers
- First-aid kit
- Tool repair kit
- Extra water and non-perishable food
- Multitool or knife
- Duct tape
- Rope
- Emergency radio
- Flashlights
Comfort items you’ll want to have include:
- Blankets, pillows, and linens for all beds
- Dishes and utensils for all campers
- A few pots and pans
- A selection of herbs and spices for cooking
- Cleaning supplies
- Toiletries for the bathrooms
- Bath towels, hand towels, and dish towels
Plan Ahead
It’s also helpful to plan out your trip in advance by checking with a mapping app to see what routes are best to travel and which roads you should avoid. Sticking to major thoroughfares is better than trying unpredictable backroads. Checking the weather in advance and on the day of your trip is also recommended so you know what kind of conditions to expect.
Figure out where you may want to stop for fuel, restroom breaks, or food along your route, as well as any tourist attractions you want to visit.
You’ll also want to contact the campgrounds you want to stay at and reserve your spot as soon as you know you want it, so you aren’t having to drive around late at night to find a place to park when you’re exhausted.
