Starting Out

Winnebago Industries was founded in 1958 by a California businessman looking to stimulate the economy of Forest City, Iowa. A group of Midwesterners interested in the travel trailer market purchased the company and renamed it Winnebago in 1960. “Winnebago” is an exonym for the Ho-Chunk tribe of the Midwest, from an Algonquian word meaning “People of the Dirty Water,” referencing all the fish and mud found in Wisconsin’s Fox River. Winnebago County, Iowa, on the Iowa-Wisconsin border, is the location of Forest City, as well.

The first Winnebago, an RV called the 001, rolled off assembly lines in 1966, priced competitively lower than other motorhomes at the time. The company dedicated itself to producing motorhome-specific furniture and other components, and they created the “Thermo-Panel,” an insulated wall that was both strong and lightweight, used in many Winnebago models.

Soon, Winnebagos became so common that the brand name became synonymous with “motorhome” in many people’s minds, which is no easy feat! Winnebagos have been used by politicians on the road, featured in movies and name-dropped in pop songs, emphasizing their international popularity.

 

The Winnebago Lifestyle

Winnebago Industries runs an owners’ group called the Winnebago International Travelers Club (WIT). The WIT Club organizes a Grand National Rally every summer in Forest City for its members. All attendees arrive in their Winnebagos for a week of fun and enjoyment, including entertainment, vendors, seminars, competitions, and factory tours.
