A summer camping grounds stay can be beautiful, but it can also quickly become unpleasant due to heat. Rising temperatures, even throughout fall, can turn a family RV into a less-than-ideal experience.

No one wants to spend their precious vacation time uncomfortable and unhappy due to the heat! That's why we gathered up the following tips for improving a summer RV camping vacation.

Bring the Right Supplies

A successful RV trip starts with successful packing. There are certain must-have items for a summer camping grounds vacation, which include:

  • Sunscreen. Remember that sunscreen does expire, so check the dates of any products and buy new ones if needed.
  • Lightweight clothing. Focus on breathable and sweat-wicking fabrics. Choose lighter colors because dark colors absorb the light (and, in turn, the heat).
  • Brimmed hats. This handy accessory helps guard your scalp from sunburn and can help shade your eyes.
  • Swimsuits. Maybe the campground has a pool or a pool is within driving distance. Or maybe there’s a nearby lake, river, or ocean shore to enjoy. Either way, swimming can offer much-needed rest from the heat as well as hours of family fun.
  • Water bottles. Every RV passenger should have a water bottle that they sip from all day long. It's especially helpful to get water bottles that keep liquids cool, which will make for an even more refreshing experience. High heat can easily lead to dehydration, but water bottles can help fight it off.

Plan Outdoor Activities with Heat In Mind

It's possible to still enjoy nature when temperatures start to soar. You just need to be strategic. Aim to be outside when temperatures are lowest, which occurs in the early morning and late evening. That's when the sun is lower on the horizon and, in turn, temperatures are lower.

It's also helpful to pick the most heat-friendly outdoor activities. Look for hiking or biking trails that are heavily shaded. See if there are any rivers, lakes, or ocean shores nearby to swim in. Find ways to explore nature without overheating.

Be Careful with Cooking

Using an oven can add plenty of heat inside your RV. If possible, try to avoid using the oven at all. If you need to cook meat or other food, use a campfire or grill instead. Many camping grounds provide campfires or grills for easy use. You can also bring your own grill if you don't want to rely on a camping ground providing it.

Try to avoid using the oven to heat up leftovers as well. Instead, give the plate a quick zap in the microwave. If you need hot water for meal preparation, or even a nice cup of coffee, try boiling it using an electric kettle. That way, you won't need to heat up the stove, which will heat up the RV.
