Towing Your Travel Trailer in the Rain
While sunny skies and dry roads are the best towing conditions, you won’t always find those, especially here in British Columbia. We’ve got our fair share of rainy weather so it’s important to learn how to tow your travel trailer safely in the rain. Here are our tips.
Balance Cargo & Don’t Overload
First, make sure that when you load up cargo on your travel trailer that you’re not putting really heavy items on one side and not the other. You don’t want to put too much pressure on the tires on one side, as they’re liable to burst or lose traction. You should also stay within the weight limits outlined in your owner’s manual. Use a highway weigh station to double-check your travel trailer’s weight if you’re unsure.
Drive Slow & Use Your Lights
Turn on your trailer’s lights and your towing vehicle’s lights in rainy weather so you can see and be seen. Keep your speed limit several kilometers below the posted speed limits and increase your following distance so that you have more space to bring your trailer to a stop on slippery roads.
Watch the Forecast
You’ll also want to keep an eye on the weather forecast for the area you plan to drive through. You don’t want to drive in heavy thunderstorms, hail, lightning, or high winds, so you may need to delay your trip or find a safer route if this is what the weather will be like. And if you find yourself out on the road when a storm whips up, don’t be afraid to pull off the highway and find a safe place to wait it out.
