TRAVEL TRAILER MAINTENANCE
With camping season upon us, you’re probably ready to hit the road and start making new memories in your travel trailer. Whether you’re traveling alone or with family and friends, you’ll want to make sure that your rig is ready for the long haul, so putting in some extra time before you leave can give you the chance to make sure you won’t run into any maintenance problems when you’re in the middle of nowhere. Jubilee RV Centre has provided a list of basic tips to help keep your travel trailer healthy and fully functioning. If you find you run into a repair you don’t know how to fix or don’t have the tools to do so, then contact our maintenance department at our location in Kamloops, British Columbia. We proudly serve Vancouver and Prince George.
MAINTAIN YOUR SEALS
When an RV manufacturer makes a frame for their rig, they try to keep it as intact as possible. Every time they have to make a cut, it’s a point of vulnerability that could let moisture in. However, they do have to make some cuts to allow for things like windows, doors, vents, and slide-outs. To fortify these vulnerable points, they add seals. These seals help prevent a number of leakage issues, so maintaining them will help save your pocketbook in the long run. Use seal conditioner to keep them from drying out and cracking and regularly inspect your seals for tears. The quicker you catch damage, the cheaper and less invasive the repairs will be.
CHECK YOUR APPLIANCES
The many features in an RV are often what make camping in one so great. The appliances alone can not only make camping easier, but more enjoyable. But you won’t want to find out on the road that your refrigerator isn’t cooling off. Take some time before every trip to test your appliances, checking for signs that something is off. Whether it seems like an electric issue or something is making a funny noise or just doesn’t seem to be performing the way it normally does, you’ll want to get that checked out before a little problem becomes a big problem. Keep in mind, this will require you hooking up your travel trailer to a power source for a short period of time.
LUBRICATE MOVING PARTS
Over time, all of the many moving parts on your rig are going to need regular attention to make sure they’re working properly. We’re talking about your slide-outs (specifically the bars), your windows and door hinges, and even the wheel bearings. That last one is a little tricky, so you may want to contact a professional, but the other two are a little easier to handle. Use dry lubricant to keep your slide-outs working smoothly and spray all hinges as needed to avoid that annoying squeak.
MANAGE THE HUMIDITY
Any RV veteran will tell you one of the biggest and most difficult issues to combat is humidity and moisture buildup. Being in an enclosed space with a lot of hot air and body heat can naturally create moisture around the interior, but there are some simple ways to fight it. On days when it’s nice enough, consider simply opening windows and vents to let fresh air through. You can also invest in a dehumidifier or desiccant crystals. You might need to use a combination of these things to effectively keep the humidity from rising in your travel trailer.
Hopefully this gives you some simple tasks to add to your regular maintenance schedule, but as we mentioned before, there’s no shame in asking for help. No matter how small the issue may be, our experienced maintenance staff is happy to help you with all your RV related needs.
